چکیده
This review is a simplified summary of the thermodynamic dislocation theory, with special emphasis on role an effective temperature. Materials scientists, for decades, have asserted that statistical thermodynamics not applicable to dislocations. By use simple, first-principles analyses and comparisons experimental data, I argue these scientists been wrong, this venerable field urgently needs be revitalized because its wide-ranging fundamental technological importance. In addition describing recent progress in understanding strain hardening, yielding, shear banding, like, theory can lead much needed, brittle ductile fracture crystalline solids.

Statistical thermodynamics of strain hardening in polycrystalline solids.
This paper starts with a systematic rederivation of the statistical thermodynamic equations of motion for dislocation-mediated plasticity proposed in 2010 by Langer, Bouchbinder, and Lookman [Acta Mat. 58, 3718 (2010)ACMAFD1359-645410.1016/j.actamat.2010.03.009]. It then uses that theory to explain the anomalous rate-hardening behavior reported in 1988 by Follansbee and Kocks and to explore the...
متن کاملLinear Thermodynamics and the Mechanics of Solids
The Thermodynamics of linear irreversible processes is presented from a unified viewpoint. This provides a new and synthetic approach to the linear mechanics of deformation of solids, which includes as particular cases the classical theory of Elasticity, Thermoelasticity and Viscoelasticity. The first two sections constitute an introduction to the general concepts and principles of linear Therm...
متن کاملPlane Strain Dislocations in Linear Elastic Diffusive Solids
Solutions are obtained for the stress and pore pressure due to sudden introduction of plane strain dislocations in a linear elastic, fluid-infiltrated, Biot, solid. Previous solutions have required that the pore fluid pressure and its gradient be continuous. Consequently, the antisymmetry (symmetry) ofthe pore pressure p about y = Orequires that this plane be permeable (p = 0) for a shear dislo...
متن کاملPredictive thermodynamics for ionic solids and liquids.
The application of thermodynamics is simple, even if the theory may appear intimidating. We describe tools, developed over recent years, which make it easy to estimate often elusive thermodynamic parameter values, generally (but not exclusively) for ionic materials, both solid and liquid, as well as for their solid hydrates and solvates. The tools are termed volume-based thermodynamics (VBT) an...
متن کاملIntrinsic anharmonicity in equations of state and thermodynamics of solids
Abstract Using thermodynamic perturbation theory, we derive a simple formalism for treating intrinsic anharmonic effects in solids. In this formalism, the central quantity is the intrinsic anharmonicity parameter a, which can be derived from vibrational spectroscopy or computer simulation. Advantages of our approach include (1) correct lowand high-temperature behaviour, (2) analyticity of all t...
